I already know what you are saying… how can your gums itch? Well, quite easily actually. For those that experience this problem, it usually starts out as a slight tingly feeling along the gum line. Over time, that tingling starts to get more and more uncomfortable to the point you feel the need to rub the gums, much as you would with an itch under a cast.
Luckily, this is usually a problem your dentist can quickly address and treat.
Causes of ‘Itchy’ Gums
Plaque Buildup – Your mouth, as you probably know, is loaded with bacteria. Throughout the day, especially if you are not brushing after meals or rinsing after drinking sugary drinks, that bacteria combines with the sugars and other particles in your mouth to form plaque. Not flossing and/or not brushing regularly allows this buildup to continue until it starts to aggravate the gums.
Gum Disease – In some cases, itchy gums are a result of gingivitis, which is the early stages of gum disease. To most, gingivitis is characterized by bleeding or swollen gums, but “itchy” gums can also be a symptom of this problem.
Allergies – Most people associate allergies with their itchy eyes and a runny nose, but they can also impact your gums. In cases where you eat or drink something that you are allergic to, one of the reactions can be an irritating, itchy feeling on the gums. Other causes of this are allergies to things like pollen, birch, or ragweed. Additional symptoms can be swollen lips or a scratchy or itchy throat. If you experience this, we would recommend not only seeing your dentist but also an allergist to test you to see exactly what you are allergic to so it can be avoided in the future.
After Surgery – Oral surgery will sometimes result in itchy gums while the area operated on heals. If this happens, you can rinse your mouth with tepid salt water. Additionally, your dentist may be able to give you tips after the surgery on how to address this possible problem. One thing to remember, however, is to NOT scratch the gums after surgery. If you do this, you could risk tearing open the sutures, which could lead to an infection.
