What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are used by many adults to replace missing teeth as an alternative to dentures or bridges. While bridges actually attach to anchor teeth, dental implants are fused directly into the bone structure.

You don’t want to leave missing teeth unaddressed because missing teeth can cause many problems. For starters, gaps in your smile can cause embarrassment and have a negative impact on your confidence. Not only that, but missing teeth can cause difficulty in speaking and chewing, making everyday more and more difficult. In addition to daily discomfort, missing teeth can also have a harmful effect on your oral health as extra plaque and bacteria build up in the gaps and your start to teeth shift. Due to this, there is a gradual development of cavities, tooth decay, and gingivitis, which, if left untreated, can have a serious impact on your overall health.

Professional implants can address each of these problems by placing permanent sturdy teeth in the place of the missing teeth. Your smile will not only be restored, but your oral health will benefit as well.

The Process

The dental implant process mainly consists of three steps. First, your dentist will implant a titanium rod into your jawbone. Over the next few months, as your gums heal, the jawbone will fuse with the titanium rod. After that, a post is attached to the implanted rod and becomes the foundation for your new tooth. Once the gum tissue is completely healed, your dentist will attach the actual replacement tooth (which is a dental crown) to the post. This implant will look real, feel real, and function just like a real tooth.

Mini Implants

Sometimes we will place a mini implant in a small gap or tight space that is too small for a full dental implant. This stabilizes lower dentures and helps keep other teeth from shifting. Mini implants are about half the width of a regular dental implant and they are not implanted as deeply into the bone structure. This means the recovery time is quicker. The mini implant procedure is a quick process, with the implant being placed in 90 minutes.
