Pediatric Dentistry

At Sampson Dental Group, we realize the importance of making your child’s visit to the dentist a positive one. We want them to feel relaxed about coming to the dentist from an early age so that positive dental habits will be established for their future. We are passionate about helping your child maintain excellent oral health, which is why we go above and beyond to ensure that your child feels at ease the moment they walk through our doors.

Preparing Your Child for Their First Visit

It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) that every child visit their dentist by their first birthday. Newly-erupted baby teeth need good dental care as soon as they are visible, so you will want to teach proper hygiene habits to your child as early as possible. Our staff has prepared an activity kit that can help your child understand more about the dentist’s office and prepare them for their first visit to the office.

Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

We recommend that you examine your child’s teeth approximately every two weeks and look for lines and discoloration that can be caused by tooth decay when new teeth begin to erupt. It is also ideal to brush the teeth of your young children four times per day. If your child is younger than two, you will not need to use fluoride toothpaste unless you have been specifically advised to do so. Practicing proper oral hygiene with your children will protect their teeth from decay, helping them smile brighter in the future!

Preventing Tooth Decay

To a great extent, regular brushing and flossing can prevent tooth decay. Children are typically at a higher risk of suffering from tooth decay because they tend to be less diligent about their oral hygiene practices. Make your children accountable for brushing and flossing their teeth. You can also help reduce the risk of tooth decay in your children by keeping them on a low-sugar diet. Also, bringing your child in every six months for a checkup and a cleaning is something we strongly encourage every parent to do. During these checkups, the dentist will examine their teeth and offer some treatment options that will aid in protecting your child’s oral health from harmful bacteria, such as fluoride treatment or sealants.
